A sacred festival that marks the birth anniversary of Lord Balarama is Balarama Jayanti. It is observed with happiness, intensity, devotion, and positivity along with different rituals and traditions in the regions of India. Balarama Jayanti is also known as Lalahi Chhath and Shashi in some of the northern states of India.

When is Balarama Jayanti actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Balarama Jayanti 2020 falls on the 9th of August month. In particular parts of India, Balarama Jayanti is celebrated on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya. Although this festival is celebrated on Shravan Purnima while it is also celebrated in the Hindu lunar month of Vaishakha which either falls in the month of April or May.

Balarama Jayanti Significance

According to Puranas, Lord Balarama who was the elder brother of Lord Krishna is considered as the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and it is also believed that he was an incarnation of great snake Aadi Shesha who is a serpent on which Lord Vishnu used to sleep.

Balarama is the seventh child of Vasudev and Janaki. Balaram with his immense power and strength killed the Demon king named Asura Dhenuka.

What to do on Balarama Jayanti

Wake up early in the morning and take a bath. A devotee should observe fast till the noontime. Wash the idols of Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna and decorate them with new clothes. Worship Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna and offer them Panchamrit and special Bhog to please them.

Devotees celebrate this festival by offering a grand prayer to Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna in the temples and they sing bhajans and dance to show their devotion towards Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna.
