Shashti is the sixth day of the lunar month. Shashti Shradh which is also known as Chhath Shradh is the day that is highly considered to perform Shradh of those who passed away on the Shashti tithi of any month. However, performing shradh rituals on the Shashti Tithi of Pitru Paksh has great significance. This year Shashti Tithi of Pitru Paksh is on 8 th September 2020.
Pitru Paksha as we all know is a period of a fortnight that starts from Purnima and extends till Amavasya in the month of Bhadrapada. The significance of Pitru Paksha is irrespective of the Pakshas, Shradh ceremony can be performed on the specific tithi. This Pitru Paksha shradh is also called as Mahalaya Paksha Shradh and ceremonies performed during this period are believed to bestow immense benefits to people who perform it with true faith and sanctification.
Not performing shradh ceremonies will directly affect the family members and performing them will definitely bless the performer and his family. Therefore most of the Hindus consider this period of Pitru Paksha the right time to show their respect and gratitude towards their ancestors.
If any person has failed to pay rites to the ancestors or was not able to perform the shradh ceremonies of the ancestors regularly, it can be compensated by performing shradh on the respective tithis during Pitru Paksha. These are also called as Parvan Shraddhas and the right time for shradh ceremonies during this period are the Kutup Muhurt or Rohina Muhurt before the Aparahna Kala (Post Meridian) time gets over.
