When is Maha Shivaratri celebrated in the year 2019?
Maha Shivaratri is one of the most auspicious festivities for the Hindus and it is believed that this day is the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is also regarded as the day when Lord Shiva presented the Tandava Nritya. It is usually celebrated on the 4th night from the day of new moon during the month of phalgun which is also called as Krishna Paksha.
The word Krishna Paksha refers to that phase of the moon when it is waning and it usually occurs in the month of March as per the English Calendar. This year that is 2019, Maha Shivaratri falls on Monday, the 4th of March.
People all over India perform this puja with great enthusiasm and strictly adhering to the customs and traditions. On this day, the disciples of Lord Shiva give procedural bath to the Shiv Linga by pouring panchagavya which is a combination of milk, sour milk, the cow’s urine, butter and dung. Most of the festivities are carried out at night and people all plays of life across the country spend the night by chanting the panchakshari mantra of Lord Shiva and sing hymns and recite verses.
Both men and women celebrate this puja but it is considered to be more special for the ladies as Maa Parvati is worshipped seeking longevity for the husbands and a contented married life.
