Kaal Bhairav Jayanti -

Celebrated as the birthday of Bhairava, Kaal Bhairav Jayanti falls after Poornima in the month of Kartik on the day of Ashtami or the 8th day after the full moon. Also called as ‘Mahakaal Bhairavashtami’ or ‘Kaal Bhairav Ashtami’, this day is considered to be the most auspicious if it falls on either Tuesday or Sunday.

It is said that Lord Shankar & Lord Brahma had a fight on who among them is more powerful. To eliminate the ego & pride of Lord Brahma, Kalabhairava appeared from Lord Shankar. Representing a fierce look, He is a four-armed God depicted with teeth protruding outwards.

Accompanied by his Dog who is his Vahana, Kalabhairava holds Sword(Talwar) or Noose(Pasa) or Snake(Sarp) in one of his right hands while a skull in his other hand. His left side holds a Damru(Drum) & a Trident(Trishul).

  • Wake up early in the morning, take bath & then start with the rituals.
  • Worship Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati & Kalabhairava together on this day.
  • Offer fruits, flowers & milk to Lord along with his Vahan, the Black Dog.
  • Chant the Vrat Katha, mantras & observe Jagran all night & fast for the complete day.
  • Recite the powerful mantras, sing Aarti accompanied by bells, drums & conches.
  • You can also perform Shradh & Tarpan to the dead ancestors.
