Vaastu shastra gives prominence to rangoli

Rangoli is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘rangavalli’. It is an art which precedes sculpture and painting. Rangoli is also a way of showcasing spirituality through art in India. Making of rangoli at the entrance of the house brings in positivity.

This tradition of making rangoli is especially followed in south India wherein the lady of the house makes rangoli before dawn and welcomes Goddess Lakshmi.

The continuous lines of the rangoli signify a never-ending cycle of life and death. It is also believed that rangoli guards the household by separating the inner and the outer world. One feels positive when entering the house and leaving the house as the rangoli detaches us from the past and the future. It forces us to remain in the present.

Rangoli plays a major role during auspicious occasions, religious and social festivals. Rangoli is also used as a status update for people who come to visit us as they would understand the mood or the atmosphere at the house just by looking at the Rangoli.

Why should one make rangoli?

As we sweep the floor or smear cow dung, subtle irregular lines are created which possess certain frequencies that would harm our body and mind. In order to overcome these inauspicious vibrations making of rangoli with the heavenly symbols will take away all ill-effects of sweeping and bestows positive results.

In olden days people used to make rangoli using rice powder with the intention of feeding tiny creatures and avoid insects to come into the house by giving them the food they require at the entrance of the door, a kitchen and storage areas so that they don't mess up with stored food and they could get the necessary food by Rangoli.

A small variation in the form of rangoli can change vibrations but one must ensure that the symbols of swastika/Om should not be made on the floor. However, the footprints depicting Laxmiji entrance should be in the direction of going into the house not coming out.

According to vaastu, using proper colour and light in the right direction will enhance your chances of becoming wealthy, successful and prosper.
