Sarva Pitru Amavasya

Shraddh and Tarpanam rituals are performed for the deceased members of the household who died on the tithis of Chaturdashi, Purnima or Amavasya. The performance of Sarva Pitru Amavasya rites can also compensate for any Shradh ceremony apart from those following the tithis which may have been skipped during the year.

This is the last day of the Pitru Paksha. There are several interesting facts about Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

· Sarva Pitru Amavasya this year is on Thursday, the 17th of September 2020.

· Irrespective of the cause of death and time of death, shradh can be performed on this tithi.

· As this day offers gratification to the departed souls, it is also called as Sarva Pitru Moksha Amavasya.

· This is the day when people can perform the shradh ceremonies of all their ancestors at the same time.

· Pitru Paksha period starts on the Pratipada day, i.e the next day of Purnima in the month of Bhadrapada. Therefore, the shradh ceremonies of those who passed away on Purnima tithi are performed on the Sarva Pitru Amavasya day only.
