Rahu is referred to as the north node of the Moon in Vedic astrology. But, one of the demons appeared as Devas and drank amruta. When Lord Vishnu came to know about the demon’s disguise, he severed the demon with his disc Sudarshana Chakra.

However, the demon did not die as he had already consumed amruta but his head and body became two separate entities wherein the head part became Rahu and the body became Ketu and they paired their bodies with the snake.
