When is Mahalakshmi Vrat is actually celebrated?
As per the Gregorian Calendar, Mahalakshmi Vrat 2020 starts on the 25th of August month. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Mahalakshmi Vrat begins on Shukla Ashtami in the month of Bhadrapada.
Mahalakshmi Vrat Significance
Once Lord Shiva gave a holy garland to Durvasa Muni which he handed over to Lord Indra. Lord Indra kept the garland on the trunk of his elephant but the elephant threw that garland away. After seeing this Durvasa Muni accused that all the gods of heaven will lose their abundance. Shortly, the evil demons started attacking the gods. To protect heaven from evil demons they reach Lord Vishu to ask for a solution to this problem.
Lord Vishnu asked them to perform Samudra Manthan with Demons that would produce amrita. In the process of Amrut Manthan, mountain Mandara became a churning rod, the lord of all serpents named Vasuki, the one who is tied around the neck of Lord Shiva had played the role of churning rope in the auspicious Samudra Manthan. Samudra Manthan started and after some time when Mountain was sinking Lord Vishnu assuming the divine Kurma avatar supported the sinking mountain and Goddess Laxmi emerged in the process of Samudra Manthan.
What to do on Mahalakshmi Vrat
Devotees should wake up early in the morning on all 16-days of Mahalakshmi Vrat. Devotees should worship the idols of Mahalaxmi with lotus, roses, fruits, and dhoop. Recite the holy name of Goddess Mahalaxmi to attain significant results. Devotees should observe fast to purify their souls. While observing fast, devotees are allowed to eat fruits and one meal per day.
