When is Sarva Pitru Amavasya actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2020 falls on the 17th of September month. According to the Hindu Lunar calendar, Sarva Pitru Amavasya is observed in the month of Bhadrapada which is considered as highly auspicious to give salvation for forefathers.

If a person is not able to perform the ritual during the period of Pitru Paksha which is considered as more auspicious to perform the rituals of Shradh then that person can perform the rituals of Shradh on the day of Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

Sarva Pitru Amavasya is the day when shradh rituals are performed for those people and ancestors whose day or tithi of death is unknown. A person can perform the Shradh for all ancestors together. It is allowed to offer Shradh for all ancestors irrespective of how they died and when they died. If the ancestors have died on Purnima Tithi then it is mandatory to perform their Shradh on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

What to do on Sarva Pitru Amavasya

A senior member of a family should perform the rituals of Shradh by offering food, flowers, Diya, and Dhoop on Sarva Pitru Amavasya. The performer of this ritual should wear yellow colored clothes on this day and invite the Brahmins to offer special food. Donate foods and clothes to needy people and recite the Mantras to seek blessings from ancestors.
