Lord Ganesha is the most important of Gods to Hindus as he is the remover of obstacles. People of all age groups right from kids to elderly ones admire Lord Ganesha and Ganesh Chaturthi is the most celebrated festival in India.
The hindu texts also state that Lord Ganesh is a great lover of food. So, varieties of dishes are prepared and offered to the deity to please and seek blessings from the almighty. Modak is believed to be Ganesh's favorite sweet and hence is also called Modakapriya. Modak is a sweet dumpling made up of jaggery, coconut and plain flour.
On the auspicious festival of Ganesh Chaturthi; devotees search for ideas for Lord Ganesh Prasad so that the deity is satisfied with their hospitality and bestows them with a happy and prosperous life. On all the 10 days of Ganesh Chaturthi, people prepare different types of food and it would be incomplete without a sweet dish.
The specially prepared sweet items to offer to Lord Ganapati are Puran poli and is specially prepared in Maharashtra. Puran poli is a flat bread made of plain flour and is stuffed with a mixture made up of chickpeas and jaggery. It is often served with ghee and warm milk.
Kadubu is offered as a prasad to the Lord in most parts of Karnataka. This dish is also prepared using maida flour stuffed with a fine mixture of jaggery and bengal gram. It is in a semi-circle shape. People sometimes make the stuffing using fresh coconut and jaggery as well.
Kheer usually prepared using milk, rice, jaggery or broken wheat is presented as prasad to Gajavadana. The other sweet dishes generally offered to Lord Ganesha are ladoo, shrikand, pongal, sheera, and some savouries like medu vada are also offered to the Lord.
There is a mythological legend where Lord Ganapati is full with the prasad offered to him by his devotees and would be going back home on his vahana that is rat. On the way, the rat tumbles and Lord Ganesh falls away. Seeing this incident and looking at the fat stomached Ganesh; Moon laughs and makes fun of his obese tummy. Lord Ganesh got angry with the Moon for insulting him and cursed that he lose his shine and those who see the Moon on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi will also be cursed. So, elders at home advise us not to see the Moon on the auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi.
