Holika Dahan – the festival celebrated a day before Dhulandi (Holi)
Holika Dahan also popularly called as Choti Holi is celebrated across India with great enthusiasm. Celebrated just a day before the festival of colours that is Holi, Holika Dahan signifies the death of demon Holika and marks the victory of good over evil. According to the holy scriptures, Holika Dahan should be carried out in the Pradosh Kaal of Puranmasi Tithi. One must avoid doing any auspicious work during the Bhadra period that exists in the first half of this tithi.
Holika Dahan is observed throughout the country in various forms and people from different communities and regions join their hands in celebrating this festival. Thus, this truly colourful festival shows unity in diversity and brings together people from various walks of life. On this day the bonfire of Holika is burnt which signifies the end of negative energies, sorrow and grief.
The festival of colours Holi is observed on the Full moon day of the Phalgun month and usually falls during the month of February and march as per the Gregorian calendar. This year i.e 2019, Holika Dhan is on 20th of March and the festival of colours Holi is on 21st March.
