Griha Pravesh brings in positivity and good luck if performed on the right mahurat.

Everybody has an emotional attachment to their homes as it makes us feel comfortable and lively. So, when we plan to move into a new house, we experience a new life. One will always look for a happy start and fill the house with positive energy. As per the Hindu tradition, when a family moves into a new home, a ceremony of Griha Pravesh should be performed as it brings in good luck, positivity and good health.

At the same time, one must take care that it is not only important to perform the ceremony, but the auspicious time at which the ceremony is performed is equally important. The auspicious time is known as ‘Mahurat’ that includes time and date to make sure that everything goes well in the future.

Here are a few tips that one should follow while planning a housewarming ceremony:

Auspicious month

The auspicious month to perform the house warming ceremony of a newly constructed house would be when the Sun is in the uttarayan position. If the property is renovated or it’s a second-hand property, then the ceremony should be conducted when the Jupiter or Venus is setting.

Conducting Vastu Puja for Griha Pravesh

Generally, vastu puja is conducted inside the house, but just before the entry a copper pot filled with water, nine kinds of grains and a coin with a coconut placed on top of it covered in a red cloth has to be taken inside the house by the lady and the man. It has to be placed the near the ceremonial kund.

Vastu Shanti

Griha Shanti puja or vastu shanti puja is a hawan that is performed to prevent harmful effects of the planets, eradicate negative energy and thus create a peaceful environment in the new premises.

However, one must ensure the following things before performing the Griha Pravesh:

  • Ensure that the doors and windows are properly fitted.
  • The roof should be properly covered.
  • The idols should be kept facing the east direction.
  • Unless Griha Pravesh is performed, the furniture should not be shifted.
  • One should not leave the house vacant for three days after the ceremony is performed.
  • One should not perform Griha Pravesh in Ashada, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Paush masas.
