Ghatasthapana - the beginning of the Navratri festivities

Ghatasthapana is one of the religious customs celebrated to commemorate the most awaited Navratri festival. Ghatasthapana is an omen of the nine-day festival and holds immense significance. It is celebrated by Hindus with adherence and extreme adoration.

When is Ghatasthapana actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Ghatasthapana 2020 falls on the 17th of September month. According to the Hindu Lunar calendar, Ghatasthapana appears in the month of Ashwin.

Ghatasthapana Significance

Ghatasthapana is considered a significant celebration as it marks the beginning of the Navaratri festival. Ghatasthapana should be performed within a specific period of time at the beginning of Navratri. Ghatasthapana is considered highly auspicious as it is an invocation of Goddess Shakti. If one performs the Ghatasthapana at the wrong time then it will displeasure the Goddess Shakti.

The first one-third of the day is the most auspicious time to perform Ghatasthapana and it can be performed in Abhijeet Muhurtha. Nakshatra Chitra and Vaidhriti Yoga are not recommended so one should avoid performing Ghatasthapana during these phases.

What to do on Ghatasthapana

One should fill a clay pot with soil and spread seven different types of grains in it. Put water regularly into the pot for a period of nine-days when the festival of Navratri is celebrated. Take a Kalasha and tie a holy thread to the Kalasha. Put holy water in Kalasha and cover it with a red-coloured cloth. Put coconut on the top of Kalasha and keep the Kalasha in the middle of the clay pot. Worship Goddess Shakti on all these nine sacred days to seek blessings and protection from this divine form.
