Performing Shradh and offering Tarpan is a way of showing respect and gratitude to the ancestors for their overall roles and responsibilities that they took and played during their lifetime. This is highly considered when it is performed during the auspicious time of Pitru Paksha.
Pitru Paksha is a period of 16-days starting from Purnima of the Bhadrapada month and extends until the Amavasya. One can perform Shradh and tarpan during this time irrespective of deaths that either took place in the Krishna Paksha or the Shukla Paksha.
It is believed that by carrying out the Shradh rituals in Pitru Paksha, one can be abundantly blessed by their ancestors who indirectly help them lead a happy life.
The significance of Dashami Shradh
Dashami Shradh is preferred to perform the shradh ceremonies of the ancestors who left for their heavenly abode on the Dashami tithi of any month. Since it is regarded that the Pitrus visit their descendants on the earth during the Pitru Paksha period to accept the offerings, most of the devout do the Shradh puja during this period.
In fact, the only way the residents of the Pitru Lok survive is through the tarpan and shradh that is offered by their family members on the earth. Therefore the process of offering tarpan and Shradh pacifies the hunger of the deceased and also earn their blessings for the overall welfare of the family.
This year, Dashami shradh falls on 24th September 2019.
