The marriage anniversary of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita is celebrated on the occasion of Vivah Panchami. Lord Rama who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu went to Janakpurdham, Nepal in Swayamvar of Goddess Sita. Lord Rama broke the bow of Lord Shiva and got married to Goddess Sita.

When is Vivah Panchami actually celebrated?

According to the Gregorian calendar, Vivah Panchami 2020 falls on the 19th of December month. The rituals of Vivah Panchami are celebrated in the Shukla Paksha on the fifth day of Margashirsha month.

Vivah Panchami Significance

King Janaka arranged the ceremony of Swayamvar in Mithila for his beloved daughter Janaki who is also known as Sita and sent an invitation to all qualified princes to participate in Swayamvar of Sita. When Vishwamitra heard about Sita Swayamvar, he took Lord Rama to take part in Sita Swayamvar as he knew that Lord Rama had a desire to marry her.

On the great occasion of Sita Swayamvar, King Janaka presented a holy bow known as Kodhandham gifted by Lord Shiva. The princes who were present in the Swayamvar were asked to lift and break the bow to show their strength and ability to get married to Goddess Sita. None of the princes was able to move the bow from its place. In the end, Lord Rama smoothly lifted and broke the bow in two parts. In this way, Lord Rama impressed king Janaka and her daughter and got married to her on this day.

What to do on Vivah Panchami

On this prosperous occasion of Vivah Panchami, all the temples of Lord Rama and Lord Sita are decorated with lamps and flowers. Devotees adore the idols of Lord Rama and Lord Sita with beautiful clothes and jewellery and perform the rituals of the marriage ceremony.

All the devotees chant sacred mantras and worship Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. Some of the devotees enact the Ramleela which tells the marriage story of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. Hindu priests perform Vivah Panchami Puja on this holy occasion and the celebration concludes with performing aarti of Lord Rama and Sita Devi.
