Vrishabha Sankranti is another auspicious festival that takes begins in the second month or the Jyeshta month according to the Hindu Solar Calendar. It happens when the planetary shift of Sun into the Vrishabha Rashi from Mesha Rashi during the month of Vaishakh.

Considered highly auspicious for “Dan Punya” activities, Vrishabha Sankranti or Vrushabha Sankraman is said to be the beginning of the Vrishabha season.

Famous as ‘Brusha Sankranti’ in Orissa, ‘Vaigasi Masam’ in Tamil Nadu, ‘Edavam Masam’ in Kerala, and ‘Jyeshto Mash’ in the Bengal, Vrishabha Sankranti 2020 is on May 14 or May 15. The word “Vrishabha” literally means ‘bull’ in Sanskrit and is the vehicle of Lord Shankar.

However, on this day Hindus give utmost importance to cows & worship Lord Vishnu asking them to get freedom from the cycle of re-birth & attain salvation. Hence, many people also gift cow which is also known as “Godan”, which brings happiness & prosperous life to you & your family.

Moreover, this period is perfect charity, penance, to perform Shradh activities, Pitru Tarpan and to take a dip in the holy river. The period just before Vrishabha Sankranti known as ‘Sixteen Ghatis’ is considered to be highly auspicious to perform any charitable or good activities.

  • Wake up early in the morning, take a holy bath & pay homage to Lord Sun. Perform ‘Godan’ i.e; donate a cow to the Brahmin on this auspicious day.
  • Those devotees observing Vrat or fast on this day have to worship “Rishabharudar”, who is another avatar of Lord Shankar.
  • Once done, prepare Bhog or Neivedyam like Payasam or Kheer to offer to the Lord & then distribute Prasadam among the family members.
  • Avoid sleeping on bed & instead sleep on the floor during the night. Pray to Lord Vishnu, visit his temples and also offer the Bhog in this temple.
