To take a note, this Thila Homam has to be performed regularly on Mahalaya Amavasya just not to please your ancestors but to avoid any problems causing in the future due to Pitru Dosha.

Pitru Paksha is the perfect time to perform this Homam, that falls 15 days before Navratri. If the individual is not aware of the time of death of their ancestors, then in such a case you can perform this ritual on Amavasya.

Til or sesame seeds are the main component offered in this Homam. Once the Til are offered, Lord Surya is to be worshipped in Kalasha and Mandala. This is followed by the chanting of the Gayatri mantra and Pitru Dosha mantras.

Then, Kalasha, Phala, and Ajya Daanas (offerings) followed by Yama Raja Pooja and Homam. Finally, this ritual gets concluded with Panda Pradanam (Bali Tharpanam – offerings of the rice ball, sesame seeds, and water).
