What is included?

• Snana and Sankalpa: Take a bath in the holy River Ganges before performing the shradh puja.
• Tarpan: In this act, the closest relatives make a sacred offering to God so that the soul may enter Swarga.
• Tarpana is also referred to as Arghya where an offering is made to all the 5 Devas and Navagrahas.
• Some perform Tarpana by using water and Sesame seeds during PitruPaksha which is known as Tilatarpana.

The significance of performing Shradh Puja in Gaya

• As per the unfolding of Gaya Mahatam in Vayupuran, at the time when mankind was being created, Lord Brahma created a demon named Gayasur who did a deep meditation at the Kolahal Mountain.
• Delighted with Gayasur’s devotion, Lord Vishnu offered him a boon.
• Gayasur wished that whoever comes in touch with him whether it was an angel or demon, insect, sinner, saint or sage, or an evil spirit should find moksha and thus get rid of all sins and can then proceed to Vaikuntha (abode of Lord Vishnu).
• The Shradh Puja performed at Gaya is also considered a way to make offerings on foot prints of Lord Vishnu, thus ensuring all deceased souls of our ancestors rest in peace permanently.
• It is believed that any person departed from the Earth, will be wandering until any of the family members perform Gaya Shradh for him.
