Rahu and Ketu are regarded as shadow planets or Chhaya Graha which moves in opposite direction inregard to the movement of other planets. Both Rahu and Ketu do not have their own positions in the solar system but they play a major role during the eclipses.

The shadow planets Rahu and Ketu take approximately 18 years to complete its revolution around the Earth. In the year 2017, Rahu Ketu will move to the Cancer & Capricorn on August 18, 2017, and would remain there for 18 months.

Legend has it that the Gods and the Demons had a great war once to acquire the nectar of immortality. Rahu Ketu as Naga Vasuki – a demon serpent helped the Gods to find the Nectar but he drank it secretly when the Gods denied giving the nectar to him. Lord Vishnu cut out Vasuki with the Sudarshan Chakra into two based on a complaint from the Sun and the Moon. Vasuki had become immortal by drinking the nectar, so he was not killed. But he was left in two parts – the upper part Rahu which remained in the skies and the lower part Ketu which reminds of the darkness in life. Now Rahu Ketu came to be enemies of the Sun and the Moon and affect their eclipses adversely.
