Important Facts
According to the legend, Bhishma Pitamah's real name was Devavrata. He was born from the womb of Ganga, wife, and mother of King Shantanu of Hastinapur. Once, King Shantanu reached Ganga beach while hunting. While returning from there, he met Matyasagandha, daughter of Haridas Kewat. On whose beauty he became fascinated and asked Matsyagandha's father for his hand. But Matsyagandha's father turned down his offer and said that your elder son is Devavrata who is the successor of your state. If you declare my daughter's son to be the heir to the kingdom, then I am ready to give my daughter's hand.
King Shantanu refuses to accept this. Some time passes about this matter, but they do not forget the problem and start feeling anxious. Seeing this, his son Devvrat asked the reason for his distraction and after knowing all this, he went to Kewat Haridas. After which he pledges to calm his curiosity by taking Gangajal in his hand that I will remain unmarried for a lifetime. He took this vow for his father. He was named Bhishma for such a difficult vow. His father was pleased and gave him the boon of desired death. After the end of the war of Mahabharata, he gave up his body.
