According to the legends, Lord Dhanwantri is the deity who looks after the celestial beings and keeps them away from death, old age and any sort of sufferings. It is also explained in the puranas that Lord Dhanwantri taught the science of Ayurveda to Sushruta sages who later started the practise of surgeries.
Lord Dhanwantri is portrayed as a God with four arms. He holds the pot of amrut in one hand while gonge and chakra can be seen in other two and he holds a leech in his fourth arm.
