What is Shani puja all about?

Shani puja is performed to please the Shani Graha or Saturn. As the Saturn is regarded as the most harmful of all the planets and is said to be inducing negative effects. This puja removes all the ill effects caused by Shani Graha to a greater extent and by relieving the individual of its effects with a little harm. Shani is believed to be both a giver as well as a destroyer. Shani usually features in dark color, clothed in black, with a sword in his hand, arrows and two daggers and is seated on a crow, which is regarded as Shani’s vahana or carrier. Shani is also called as Shanaischarya, Shanishwara, and Chaya Putra.

How did Lord Shani emerge?

Shani is the son of Surya Deva and his wife Chaya. Surya Dev or Sun was first married to Sandhya with whom he had three children. But Sandhya Devi could not tolerate the bright radiance of Sun for a long time and went back to her parents' house. Before Sandhya left for her parents' house, she said to her shadow or Chaya to take care of her children and to look after Surya. Shani was born to Surya dev and Chaya. Lord Shani follows the principles of Lord Shiva. There are ancient scriptures which tell us that when Shani opened his eyes for the first time right after his birth, the Sun had to face the eclipse. Shani was born on Amavasya of Vaishakh month and hence this day is celebrated as Shani Jayanti. People offer prayers and worship Shani Dev on Amavasya of Vaishakh month to get rid of the malefic effects of Shani on them.

The suitable time to perform Shani puja

This Shani puja has to be performed on specific days that are suitable for Shani Dev. These days are Shani Amavasya, Shani Jayanti, Shani trayodashi. Shani Jayanti is commemorated on Vaishak vadya chaturdasi amavasya and it is said that Lord Shani was born on this auspicious day. Keeping in mind his furious nature, puja is performed in a very sober manner and ensured that all the rituals are strictly followed. The new moon that falls on a Saturday is known as Shaneshchari Amavasya. In a year normally there will be occurrences of two or three Shaneshchari Amavasyas and with a lot of dedication, prayers are offered on this day to get maximum possible benefits. According to the Indian lunar calendar, Shani Trayodashi occurs on the Shukla Paksha of Asadha month and is considered as one of the most auspicious days for Shani puja as it indicates the special day for the deity. If the Trayodashi falls on a Saturday, it is considered to be a very prominent day to please the furious god and seek happiness and illuminate positive energy that will help in vanishing off all negativities in life.
