Navratri Anusthan is performed by making sankalpa in the name of the performer then Kalash Sthapana also called as Ghata sthapana is done and lamp is light which continuously glows for nine days and is called Akhand Jyoti. The Durga Saptshati path is recited on all 9 days during the anusthan to invoke blessings of the Goddess almighty. People fast for the entire nine days and aarti is performed to the Goddess both in the morning and in the evening.

It is stated that Goddess Durga took various forms like Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, Siddhidhatri to kill the demon Kalasura. The battle went on for nine days and nine nights and finally on the tenth day Maa Durga assassinated the demon and won over evil.
