Purpose :

According to mythological beliefs, centuries ago, Asuras became very powerful on earth and they started a war against Gods. They killed many gods and caused havoc in heaven. The most powerful demon among all the demons was Mahishasura. Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma created Goddess Durga in the form of Shakti. Each god provided special weapons to Goddess Durga. After this, Adishakti Durga came to earth and killed the Asuras. Goddess Durga fought with Mahishasura's army and eventually killed him. The festival of Durga Ashtami started that day.

Durga Ashtami is also known as Atham or Athami. Durga Ashtami of Navratri is called Mahashtami or Durga Ashtami which is considered as one of the holiest festivals of the Hindu religion. On this day, Mahagauri who is the eighth form of Goddess Durga is worshiped with great enthusiasm.

On this day, first of all, take a bath and get purified. Then put Ganga water at the place of worship and purify it. After this, put a red cloth on a wooden board and install a statue or picture of Maa Durga on it. Then offer Akshata, Sindoor, and red flowers to the Goddess Durga. Offer fruits and sweets as Prasad, now light incense and lamps. Recite Durga Chalisa and then perform Aarti of Goddess Gurga. Worship Goddess Durga with faith and devotion for the fulfillment of wishes.

Along with Goddess Durga, Kuldevi, Maa Kali, Dakshin Kali, Mahakali, Bhadrakali is also worshipped on the occasion of Durga Ashtami. God, Danav, demons, Gandharva, Nag, Yaksha, Kinnar, and humans are also worshipped on this day. Mata Mahagauri is considered as the form of Goddess Annapurna. Goddess Annapurna is also worshipped on this day. Therefore, food is offered to Kanyas and Brahmans on this day. Observing Maha Ashtami Vrat on Durga Ashtami holds great significance as it offers longevity to children who observe this Vrat.

It is prohibited to eat coconut on Durga Ashtami as eating it destroys the intellect. Eating sesame oil, red-colored greens, and bronze is prohibited. Coconut can be offered to the mother. Pumpkin and gourd have also been prohibited in many places as it is offered as a sacrifice to the mother.
