Important Facts

Adi Shankaracharya was born in 788 AD in a village called Kalpi in Kerala. His father's name was Shivguru and his mother's name was Subhadra. Adi Shankaracharya's father was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. When they did not have children for a long time after the marriage, Shivguru and Subhadra did penance to Shiva.

Lord Shiva came into his dream and asked him to ask for a wish. Shivguru asked Lord Shiva to bless a child who has longevity, knowledge of every subject, and whose fame spreads far and wide and lasts for ages. On this, Lord Shiva said that if your child has longevity, then he will not be having knowledge, and if he has knowledge then there will be no longevity. Shivguru said that he wanted a brilliant child. After some time, when the son was born to Shivguru, he named the child Shankar as he was received with the blessings of Lord Shiva.
